Physical Preparation

Define a plan, and establish a time and goals. Start with brief walks and increase the pace and distance throughout each day, particularly if you do not exercise regularly. This way, you will be better prepared by the time you get to Fatima, and there will be less stresses and strains on the way.

You can download free apps on your Smartphone in order to know exactly how many miles you are walking, like Nike +, Runtastic, Charity Miles, or Endomondo.

How many miles should I walk per day?

The number of miles per day varies depending on the physical condition of each pilgrim.  We recommend a minimum of 9 miles and a maximum of 19 miles per day.

What is the best time to go on walks?

The popular saying is that ‘Pilgrims are not lazy’ and get up to the roosters crowing in order to start their walk.

You should avoid walking when the sun is hotter; therefore, it is important to make the most of the sunshine in order to light up the way.
Watching the sunrise could be a good excuse to wake up early!

At what time of the year should I go on my Walk?

Fatima's great pilgrimage takes place in May and in October. However, you can go through Caminhos de Fatima during the whole year. The ideal months are during spring and autumn, since the maximum temperature is around 68ºF (20ºC) and minimum temperature is around 50ºF (10ºC).

In the summer, the maximum temperature in this region may be higher than 113ºF (45ºC) while in the winter, thermometers may show negative temperatures, which makes it hard to go on walks. Still, you may find reasons to go on your Walk all year through, and the rain or sunshine will not stop you.
